Holidaze (or I’m a Nerd and Proud of It)

What a week that’s just past!  Except for fighting a cold (least said about that the better), I had a pleasant and interesting holiday.

Wacky Weather

Monday (Dec. 22) it was 2°F when I got up with wind chill in the negative two digits.  Tuesday we had freezing rain and ice covered roads.  My mum fell on the icy driveway and broke her arm and our 20 minute trip to my grandmothers turned into a 30 mph crawl.  Boxing Day was foggy.  Saturday it got up to 67° F.  Sunday we had incredible winds.  Today, thankfully, is brilliantly sunny and in the 40s.

Celebrations

Tuesday was the extended family gathering at my grandparents, except that it wasn’t very extended since the weather prevented a lot of people from showing up.  My mother did give my cousin Teresa her high school graduation gift — a homemade quilt.  I get my crafty genes honestly.

My cousin Taylor (far right) looks just as thrilled as any 15 year old boy would be to be pressed into service for modeling of the quilt.

Thursday was the day my parents, uncle, and I exchanged gifts.

Gifts Recieved

I haven’t been much on showing off gifts received since a fourth or fifth grade classmate dropped and broke my brand new Magic Eight Ball on the playground years ago.  However, I did receive a plethora of knitter’s loot.

Loopy Ewe sock blocker, KnitPicks gift certificate, and shawl pins from my woodworker dad.  (He’s got a whole tray of extras he’s made to sell as well.)

I’m thrilled to get this useful yarn meter.  Now I’ll know how much is in those odd balls and skeins in my stash.  I guess being excited about this qualifies me as a “crazy knitting old lady” to combine a couple of my sister’s more flattering terms.  (Jen, you’re only 6 years younger, so I wouldn’t get too cocky.)  I don’t think it would make me seem any less of a nerd to note that I’m also glad I got the Inspector Lewis and Hamish MacBeth DVD series as well.

I’m looking forward to my sister flying in near midnight on New Years Eve, so she can start the year out harassing me in person.

Whooo-Hoooo!!!!!! Two Weeks Off

Because I’m pretty much out of blog fodder at the moment, here’s something that’s been going around:

ABC, learn about me!

A is for age: Well, I was born the year Biafra seceded from Nigeria and Israel fought the Six Day War.  Also, The Graduate was in theaters and the Beatles came out with Sergeant Pepper.  If you said “huh?” about any of that you don’t deserve to know.

B is for burger of choice: Mom’s turkey burger.

C is for the car I drive: 2004 Honda CRV.  Silver.

D is for your dog’s name: I have a cat named Lady Jane.  She is much easier to deal with than a dog.

E is for essential item you use every day: Allergy meds.

F is for favorite TV show at the moment: Hmmm . . .NCIS?  Bones?

G is for favorite game: Hockey.

H is for home state: Indiana

I is for instruments you play: Zip, zilch, nada.  Although I played the clarinet in middle school and took a guitar class in college.

J is for favorite juice: Orange.

K is for whose bum you’d like to kick: Clueless legislators interfering with education.

L is for last restaurant at which you ate: Chilis.  (I almost never eat there, but my parents took me out for my birthday.)

M is for your favorite Muppet: Ernie. Animal is runner up.

N is for number of piercings: 4 total (2 each ear).

O is for overnight hospital stays: Don’t ask.

P is for people you were with today: 730 insane children ready for Christmas break, a large group of faculty even more ready.

Q is for what you do with your quiet time: Knit and read (sometimes at the same time; sometimes with audiobooks).

R is for biggest regret: Do not dwell on regrets.

S is for status: Happily single.

T is for time you woke up today: 5:30 ish.

U is for what you consider unique about yourself: I am a hockey-loving, knitting-fiend klutzy librarian who would love to live in Ireland.

V is for vegetable you love: Broccoli.

W is for worst habit: Food that is the nutritional opposite of broccoli.

X is for x-rays you’ve had: Lungs, sinuses, tear ducts.

Y is for yummy food you ate today: Homemade vanilla shortbread made as a birthday present by my friend Lacy.

Z is for zodiac: Sagittarius (although the fact that it says “you know how to change when the time is right . . .all change is good” shows how ludicrous I find the whole concept).

Christmas is the Time for Fruitcakes

And not all of them are the edible type, if you know what I mean.  In the spirit of the season I have composed the following dogerell.

‘Twas the week before Christmasdec-15-0034
And all through the school
Students played a new game:
“Let’s break every rule.”

They didn’t set out
To be such a pain.
But Christmas, you see,
Short-circuits the brain.

They just cannot manage
To stay at their desks.
And you want to do what . . .
Give standardized tests?!

The weather outside
Is twenty degrees.
They’re still wearing shorts;
Do they care if they freeze?

But they don’t really need
Appropriate dress.
They give teachers nightmares
With indoor recess.

The lunchroom we finddec-15-0023
Is all in uproar.
Spilled milk, yelling kids,
A candy cane store.

A really good girl
Falls out of her chair
And another one jumps
And spins in midair.

The hallways are decked
With ribbon and holly.
Kids bouncing off walls
Don’t make teachers jolly.

Only a week,
Then a deep breath we’ll take,
Wave goodbye to them all
And say “Have a good break!”
